MATH 425 -- Important Placement Test Information
When and where will the Placement Test be given?
The Math 425 Placement Test is given at Freshman Orientation, at the beginning of the summer, fall, and spring semesters, and near the end of the fall and spring semesters. For people who plan to take MATH 425 in Spring 2010, the placement test will be given on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 and again on Tuesday,
January 26, 2010. On each of these dates, the test will be given from
12:40 to 2 PM in Parsons Hall room Iddles L101.
.
Who must take the test?
If you plan to take MATH 425 and you have not met the prerequisite, you must take the placement test. Note that the prerequisite for MATH 425 is a grade of C or better in
MATH 418 (Analysis and Applications of Functions), or placement via the placement test.
Do I have to sign up ahead of time to take the test?
No -- You do not have to sign up ahead of time. Simply show up 5 to 10 minutes before test time with a #2 pencil and a picture ID. Calculators are not allowed.
What material does the test cover?
The test is a 40-question multiple-choice test covering topics from algebra and precalculus. Calculators are not allowed. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- algebraic fractions
- exponents, roots and radicals
- logarithms and their properties
- inequalities
- absolute value
- factoring
- solving equations and inequalities, including
- linear equations or inequalities
- systems of linear equations or linear inequalities
- quadratic equations or inequalities
- equations involving radicals
- equations or inequalities involving absolute value
- functions, including
- composition of functions
- domain and range of a function
- transformations of functions
- inverse functions
- logarithmic and exponential functions
- trigonometric functions
- topics from trigonometry, including
- basic trigonometric functions and their transformations
- values of the trigonometric functions at "special" angles
- graphs of trigonometric functions
- basic trigonometric identities
- notions of period, amplitude and phase shift
- inverse trigonometric functions and their graphs
Are there any review materials available?
Online review materials for some topics, as well as a link to a short
practice test, can be found by following the link to the "Math Help
Center" webpage, found in the menu on the left-hand side of this page.
You might also find it helpful to try some of the problems from the sample
tests on the Math 418 Sample Tests page.
(Note: These questions were not designed
specifically as review questions for the placement test. However, they
are the actual questions from the tests given in Math 418 during the Fall
2002 semester, and as such, provide excellent practice for the precalculus
portion of the placement test.)
What if I still have questions?
If you have questions that were not answered, you can send e-mail to Ellen O'Keefe at emo@cisunix.unh.edu, and she will get back to you as soon as she can.
