THE SPICERACK SYSTEM

(Last updated on March 22, 2006)

General Information

The Mathematics and Statistics department owns a cluster of twelve identical Linux machines that are housed in Morse Hall, Room 218. The software on these machines is maintained and regularly updated by the Computing and Information Services. The twelve spice machines are served by a thirteenth Linux machine. Here's the list of their names (you need this information for remote connections):

Eventually, a fourteenth machine will be added to perform regular backups of all user accounts. Until then the users are responsible for their own backups.

Faculty members, staff members, graduate students and guests of the Mathematics and Statistics department are eligible for accounts on spicerack. Undergraduate students registered in any computer-related course offered by the department, are also eligible for spicerack accounts for the duration of the course.

If you are eligible for a spicerack account but do not have one yet, then please contact The Spicemaster.

Logging On

The list of users allowed to log on to the spice machines is maintained on Spicerack. Your account name and password is the same as on cisunix. This also means that if you do not have a cisunix account, then you will not be able to log on to any of the spice machines.

If you have a spicerack account, then that is the account that you will find yourself in when you log on. The contents of your cisunix account will also be available at mountpoint /cishome/$USER/cisunix.

If you do not have a spicerack account, then you will find yourself in your cisunix account when you log on.

Email

Cisunix email may be accessed from the spice machines. In keeping with CIS policy, pine has been configured on the spice machines to connect to your cisunix email through the IMAP protocol.

This also means that it will no longer be possible to receive email at the spicerack.sr.unh.edu addresses. In order to give you some time to notify your contacts of your new non-spicerack address, mail forwarding capability will be available for some time on spice. Just create a file named .forward in your home directory, containing your new email address in full e.g. john.doe@unh.edu. This will ensure that all incoming mail is redirected to the new address. As for the email already sitting in your spicerack inbox, contact The Spicemaster for a one-time retrieval.
