A competition for outstanding research by an undergraduate
The Morgan Prize, an annual award of $1,000, was endowed by a
gift from Mrs. Brennie Morgan of Allentown, PA. Students eligible
for the prize are individual undergraduate students or groups of
students from any college or university in the U.S. or its
possessions, Canada or Mexico.
To apply, undergraduates submit one or more published or
unpublished papers that represent their work. Professors can also
nominate students. To be eligible for this year's award, students
must have been undergraduates in December of the previous year and must submit
their papers no later than June 30 of this year.
The Rules:
- The prize is to be awarded to an undergraduate
student (or students having submitted joint work)
for outstanding research in mathematics and is
entirely endowed by a gift from Mrs. Frank (Brennie) Morgan.
- Any student who is an undergraduate in a college or
university in Canada, Mexico, or the U.S. or
its possessions is eligible to be considered for this
prize.
- No more than one prize shall be awarded each year, and a
few honorable mentions may be made.
- The prize recipient's research need not be confined to
a single paper; it may be contained in several papers.
- The paper (or papers) to be considered for the prize must
be submitted while the student is an undergraduate;
it (they) cannot be submitted after the student's
graduation.
- Publication of the research is not required.
- The prize is to consist of $1,000 and a certificate, and,
for honorable mentions, a certificate.
- The research paper (or papers) may be submitted for consideration
by the student or by a nominator.
- All submissions for the prize must include at least one letter
of support from a person, usually a faculty member,
familiar with the student's research.
- The recipients of the prize are to be selected by a standing
joint committee of the AMS, MAA, and SIAM.
The joint committee consists of six members, each serving
for a term of three years, two apponted by the President
of the AMS, two by the President of the MAA, and two by the
President of SIAM.
The decisions of this committee are final.
- Two of every three consecutive awards of the prize shall occur at a
joint national meeting of the AMS and MAA. Every third award
of the prize shall occur at a national meeting of SIAM.
- The prize for each year is awarded for papers submitted for consideration
no later than June 30 of that year - or on behalf of - students
who were undergraduates in December 1995.
- After five years of operation, the prize and the regulations governing it
shall be reviewed by the governing bodies of AMS, MAA, and SIAM,
according to each society's rules and procedures.
